Are you looking to start a blog in 2019 and make money online? Well this is the BEST guide to starting a blog with step-by-step instructions that are super easy to follow!
Who Am I?
Hi! 👋 I’m Jenifer and I’m the founder and blogger behind Gadget Girls.
I started my blog in 2016 as a hobby. I’m a nerdy girl who likes gadgets, so I started blogging about that. (Pro-tip: Blog about something you are PASSIONATE about.)
In just 2 years, and with lots of hard work, Gadget Girls has gone from a hobby, to making over $110,000 a year for me and my family!
I was able to quit my day job. I am able to work from home and spend time with my 2 year old son. I can travel whenever I want. I have a flexible schedule. I am absolutely loving life now!
I get the benefits of being a stay-at-home-mom like my grandmother did, but I have a career like my mother did. It’s the best of both worlds! I’m now a work-at-home-mom, a WAHM. 🤣
If you have the same dream I did, and you want this life, it’s a lot of hard work. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking it’s easy money, it’s not. But it is totally, 100% doable!
Can’t I just stat a blog on blogger.com?
If you want to ever make money from your blog, you have to OWN it. That means no using free blogging platforms like blogger.com.
I know it’s scary paying for something when you don’t know yet if it will make money, but it’s a very SMALL investment. I use Bluehost for my web hosting. And it’s only $3.95 a month!
What does a person who wants to open up a restaurant have to spend to get started? $10,000? $20,000? At less than $4 a month starting a blog has to have the lowest start up costs of ANY side-hustle, I’ve ever heard of.
There are many web hosting companies out there. But I HIGHLY recommend Bluehost. I’ve been with them from the beginning, and it’s been great! They provide, reliable cheap hosting, with great customer support. You can start your own blog with them for $3.95 a month!
What is WordPress?
WordPress is the software that runs your blog. It’s also what you use to write all of your blog posts, add links, add pictures or videos, it runs the show. It’s FREE, and it is the industry standard. ANY blog you follow has a 99% chance of being a WordPress blog.
The bottom line is, if you want to blog and make money off of it, you need to pay for your own hosting, and you need to use WordPress.
So Let’s Get Started!
There are only 3 steps to start your own WordPress blog.
How to start a WordPress blog on Bluehost
1. Chose a domain name.
The first thing you need to do is to think about what you want your domain name to be.
The domain name is what people type in, to get to your website. But most people will be coming to your site through google, or facebook, so it’s important, but it doesn’t have to be THE most catchy name ever.
WHAT you blog about is way more important than having the perfect name. So don’t overthink it.
It does not have to be .com
When I started Gadget Girls, Gadgetgirls.com was not available, so I chose GadgetGirls.space and it has worked out great!
There are tons of other endings available, so if someone has the .com you want, just pick something else! In 1999 you had to have a .com. Today it’s not that important.
Normally you have to pay for your domain – it’s not a lot about $10-$15 a year. But Bluehost will actually give you a FREE domain, for the first year, if you sign up for 12 months of hosting.
You can also register your domain somewhere else, like Godaddy, but it makes setting things up much more complicated. And you have to pay $10/year over there instead of FREE at Bluehost.
Do you have your domain picked? Great! It’s time to start your blog!
2. Buy hosting for your blog.
Now that you have a domain picked out, you buy hosting, then you set up WordPress on that hosting. It’s that easy! The “Basic” plan is really all you need. It’s only $3.95 per month.
If you sign up for 36 months, it’s $3.95 per month.
If you sign up for 24 months, it’s $4.95 per month.
If you sign up for 12 months, it’s $5.95 per month.
$5.95 is still a great price! What does your cell phone cost each month? $5.95 is nothing.
Obviously the best deal is 36 months, but it’s up to you to decide how committed you are to blogging.
You don’t need the other items that Bluehost sells, so I would uncheck those.
If you have any problems, you can send an email to Bluehost. They have great customer support!
3. Install WordPress on Bluehost.
Okay, this is probably the step you have been waiting for, if you want to start a WordPress blog!
- After you sign up with Bluehost, they guide you through exactly what you need to do to start the blog.
- First, Bluehost will ask you to pick a theme for your blog. You can pick a random one or find one that you like. You can change it later so it’s not a big deal right now.
- Click on “Start Building.”
- On the next screen, you can choose “Business” or “Personal” – it’s up to you, and you will build your blog.
WOOHOO! You now have a WordPress blog. It really is that easy! You will have to work on the design and producing high-quality content, but the blog is yours. Good luck!
